LISA - Learning Analytics for Sensor-Based, Adaptive Learning

Research Project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

Learning analytics deals with the analysis of data generated during learning processes. The data is then used to support these very processes. In LISA, the data is sourced from e-learning systems (online learning magazines, classical learning management systems, serious games), and is merged with data from sensor hardware developed by the partners. Affective computing techniques allow for the derivation of information about the user's mental and emotional state (stress, concentration, etc.) from the sensor data. As a result, the e-learning systems become adaptable, reacting to the individual user's behaviour. ELSI issues (ethical, legal and social issues), such as data protection are also part of the project.
The partners for this project are Humboldt-Universität, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, the Leibnitz-Institut für Wissensmedien in Tübingen, as well as Promotion Software GmbH, NEOCOSMO GmbH and SGM GmbH, with brainshuttle GmbH as an associated partner. LISA is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

This project is a pre-visualisation of a conceptualised, possible set-up of a Smart Classroom. This demonstrates the expertise of SGN in 3D modelling and 3D content development for AR/VR applications, including spatial and learning environment design.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Design (Rapid Prototyping) of Instances of Software Application Front-Ends for Vocational Training

Customer: MCAST

The use of mobile devices has increased in basically any type of application – for many young people, a mobile device is typically their first exposure to a screen. In order to easily reach them and provide them with education through the technical means that they are already using on a constant day-to-day basis, the main focus of the development lies on mobile platforms (tablets, modern smartphones). These examples are presented to demonstrate expertise  in rapid GUI prototyping and design thinking.

This project entails the development of a UNITY and Unreal based, interactive and immersive 3D showcase for modern architectural visualisation. The main tasks include 3D modelling, texturing and rendering of still images, as well as application integration and hardware set-up.

Online Courses in Open Data and Data Analytics

Customer: EIT – European Institute of Technology

EIT Digital is the leading European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organisation driving Europe's digital transformation. The EIT Digital Academy delivers technical excellence and entrepreneurial skills and mindset to digital engineers and entrepreneurs at all stages of their careers. Their target group comprises ICT officers, developers, project managers and senior management from SMEs, industry and the public sector. The task included the development and production of online courses, e.g. on the topics of "Strategic Open Government Data", "Semantic Business Rules and Decision Models". The course design conveys theoretical concepts and practically oriented application knowledge. They can be implemented as the online part of blended-learning courses, as well as standalone e-learning courses.
The development process not only entailed content development, but also a whole software integration and multisite deployment process to edX and Drupal-based learning management systems.

Technical Solutions for Barrier-Free Public Transport

Customer: BVG – Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (the public transport company of Berlin)

In Berlin there are about 25,000 blind and partially sighted persons, who rely on the use of public transport. Through the project "2-Sinne-Prinzip in Bussen und Bahnen" ("Two-senses principle in busses and trams"), the City of Berlin and the BVG (the main public transport company of Berlin) pursue their joint objective of providing a barrier-free passenger information system.
In the scope of this project, a participatory model test is realised from February 2018 to February 2019. Several technical solutions for the implementation of the barrier-free two-senses principle shall be tested in busses, trams and at the respective stops.
In cooperation with the BVG, SGM is realising an evaluation of the technical solutions to be tested.

Safe Handling of Pyrotechnics - BGRCI Pyrotechnics Corporate Training

Customer: Employer's Association for Raw Materials and the Chemical Industry (BG RCI)

Pyrotechnics offer a broad variety of applications – from the beautiful fireworks on New Year's Eve, to flares, airbags in cars, and even for diverse military applications. However, handling these materials can be very dangerous. Particularly, when the specific properties of these materials are not understood and their behaviour appears erratic and unusual.
In the developed e-learning application, specialists will learn what pyrotechnic compositions are, what they consist of, how they behave under different conditions, and how their great force can be controlled and utilised. Step-by-step explanations accompanied by state-of-the-art interactive animation techniques aim to teach people about the chemical and physical aspects of this class of materials in order to sharpen one's senses to recognise dangers before they pose a threat to someone's life.
This example shows the 3D visualisation of the Metal Tube Test, which is employed to test the thermal sensitivity of explosive substances.

Introduction of Worldwide E-Learning for Volleyball Trainer Education

Customer: FIVB – Fédération Internationale de Volleyball

This project comprises the development of a multi-language, gamified, cross-platform and CI consistent e-learning solution for Sports Strategy Training. The roll-out (in four language variants) was deployed to 230 sub-associations worldwide. Furthermore, digital animation techniques are used in the content development process within the training lessons for easy-to-perceive visualisation of tactics and play moves, among others. Trade-offs like offline courses or learning manuals are developed correspondingly, according to the customer's corporate identity requirements.

Educational AR/VR Application Development Frameworks

These examples show e-learning Augmented Reality (AR) demonstration applications based on our own app framework. They comprise image-based tracking recognition, interactive simulation and AR scene-based quizzes. The second example provides for image-based 3D object recognition with realtime AR content mapping. This app framework brings multi-platform deployment based on available frameworks like UNITY(tm) and can be deployed to smartphones, tablets and high-end computing platforms for classroom installation. Supported platforms are Android, iOS and Windows 10, as well as a wide range of smart glasses and AR/VR headsets.

Augmented Reality Training Applications

Customer: FIVB – Fédération Internationale de Volleyball

This example shows the development of an Augmented Reality (AR) learning application for strategy education of volleyball trainers. The application replaces a complicated textbook and explains one of the multiple volleyball attack formation numbering systems through visualisation. The application was designed, developed and deployed to Android and iOS platforms. It places a virtual and interactive miniature volleyball court right on your desk.

Mobile Interactive Training Applications

Customer: FIVB – Fédération Internationale de Volleyball

The development of interactive training tactic board for mobile devices (tablets or smartphones) was created to be used for, and by, volleyball trainers to learn, and teach, tactical strategies. The application replaces a handheld paper-based tactic board, allowing the flexibility of digital interaction to be displayed on screens of any size. The app was designed, developed and deployed to Android and iOS platforms. This app uses the standard FIVB CI-based symbols and semantics.

VEThealth

VEThealth

The Erasmus+ project VEThealth is aimed at nurturing and improving vocational education and training (VET) in the field of healthcare while setting up a solid career path. As part of this objective, the project’s partners SGM Educational Solutions, brainshuttle™, the Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology (MCAST), and the Universidad de La Laguna have created an online Healthcare Assistants Course, which is for free upon registration.

Recently, VEThealth has been adopted by EPALE (Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe) for their recommended "Resource Kit #2" (see pg. 5). The kit can be found here (external link via EPALE).

COVID-19 labour safety online course

Due to unprecedented circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which started in Germany in March 2020, SGM Educational Solutions and brainshuttle™ teamed up with the work safety consultancy Nagel & Kollegen to produce an easy-to-understand and legally compliant online course to inform participants on basic protection from COVID-19 at work. The course's content is based on an official set of rules and guidelines published by the German Federal Ministry of Labour an Social Affairs.

E-learning: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and E-Invoice

For the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018, SGM, together with the eco Association of the Internet Industry (eco - Verband der Internetwirtschaft e.V.), developed the online course "Einführung Datenschutz-Grundverordnung" („Introduction GDPR“), in order to highlight the changes in data protection law and to enable employees in companies to identify possible needs for action for their companies. Further e-learning courses additionally covered the topics of e-invoices, industry 4.0, andemployer branding.

The courses were used as yet another educational offer within the framework of the mainproject 2018, which was initiated by the University of Applied Sciences of Aschaffenburg and “MainSite“ by the „Industrie Center Obernburg“ (ICO), and was in parts also offered to members of the eco association.
